Yeah I’m slow this week month life.
Monday was book day. Dave Geary spoke to Mark Amery about his work in progress about Mark Twain’s visit to Wanganui. They are very funny together. I can’t say I walked away with any literary tips or gems but they put on an entertaining hour and as they were speaking I had a brain wave for my manuscript so there must have been creative synapses firing through the room. I’ve been thinking a lot about the path to manhood lately and Dave Geary’s blokey veneer in life and his writing is quite interesting in that respect.
Speaking of journies to adulthood, I’ve also been watching the 7Up series (I’ve just seen 21UP) and it’s great. Some of the toughest blokes spoke about what was most important to them very candidly and what they found difficult and they spoke about love for their mother’s and girlfriends and the difficulty of articulating it. It was very moving and quite voyeuristic.
Okay, so I’m a total nerd, it’s true. I know I laughed at Rachael and her index cards but the truth is I have a stash at home myself. Not only that but I used to have my entire music collection catalogued on them in the late 80’s. Not only that but I only write on them in pencil so I can re-use them. Anyway I’m laying them out on the kitchen table now to write the salient points of each chapter of the book on so I can see them in front of me like a time-line. I think I have resolved a couple of plot hiccups and the characters are firming up. i might even be able to tell you some actual details about it soon. Progress!
